Egyptian Cab Driver

This story takes place in Fall of 2006 when I was on Semester at Sea.

We were trying to fly from Sharm el-Sheikh to Cario when we got stopped while boarding the plan. The man taking the boarding passes said we were not allowed to board the plan because we didn’t have proper visas. We showed them our ticket stubs that said we had just flown there from Cairo a few days earlier. Finally, after much arguing he let us board the plane. (I was with about 30 of my shipmates)

We finally arrived back in Cario at about midnight. We had to get back to Alexandria by 6:00 am or the ship would leave us behind. We found a cab driver that was willing to drive us the 137 miles (221 km) back to Alexandria. Well as you may or may not know, the Egyptian s don’t use their headlights on the freeway! This made for an absolutely terrifying cab ride. About half way through the cab ride the driver pulled over. We asked whim why he had pulled over. He simply said “I’m tired.” Well this didn’t make me feel good to say the least. Finally he got back on the freeway and we made it back to Alexandria right as the sun was rising.
